Norfolk RFU Barclays Youth Cup Competition - 2002/03

U13 David Blizzard Memorial Trophy
Sunday 30 March 2003

Wisbech U-13 silence any and all critics in memorable style at Chapel Lane on Sunday, surpassing the challenge of a fired up Diss side to claim the under 13 crown as Norfolk Champions with a awesome and ruthless 55 - 0 hammering...

With a display of rugby every bit as brilliant as the spring weather, Wisbech did not so much beat Diss as blow them away, pulling off the first ever cup win in Wisbech's history. The Norfolk side were man-for-man much bigger than Wisbech, but when it came to technique, speed, and ferocity in the tackle, they were completely outclassed. Wisbech were soon on the scoresheet with a try by fullback Josh Woulfe, but although the place kick was too wide for skipper Darryl Veenendaal to convert, he soon had the chance to make amends when he added the two points to the first of three outstanding tries by outside centre Michael Gillick The heavier Diss pack had the better of the early scrums, but hooker Ronnie Harvey soon neutralised the weight advantage by getting several strikes against the head. Tries by Veenendaal, Trigger Coe and Gillick with his second score gave the home side a 31 point lead, and flanker William Pettit finished the first half with a typical opportunist try from close range.

Playing with courage and character, Diss came back hard after the interval, but this only seemed to intensify the Wisbech fire, and tackle after tackle went in. The visitors were physically overwhelmed. Whatever went into the team talk, coaches Andy Anderson, Leonard Veenendaal and Chris White should try to put it in bottles and sell it: in the past Wisbech have been guilty of losing focus when they have had a decent lead, but this was something different. Gillick's hat-trick, and another touch-down from Coe brought the score to 48-0, and George Fraulo rounded off a fine display with an excellent individual try. Veenendaal converted to bring the match to an end with the score at 55-0

There are too many in contention for a single man of the match award, instead we opted for the team, as it was a team display of the highest order!
Next season may bring very different fortunes for this fine side, as several key players will moving away to new schools in September. Whatever the future brings, today's large crowd will think themselves lucky to have seen a memorable display by an equally memorable group of boys.

The scorers for Wisbech:
Tries: Woulfe, Veenendaal, Gillick (3), Coe (2), Pettit and Fraulo
Cons: Veenendaal 5
