1st XV - Saturday 15th of March 2003
Thurston 47          Wisbech 0

The injury curse that has beset the Wisbech 1st XV this season is continuing to inflict damage and costing valuable league points. With a number of senior players already injured, loosing 47 - 0 to Thurston in an Eastern Counties 2 North league match was made worst with the latest addition Mark Martin who broke his leg ending his recent good form.

Wisbech started the match having to make 7 forced changes due to injury including their skipper Paul Lee. In the first ten minutes of the game Mark Martin, who had stepped into the1st XV as a replacement 3 weeks ago and as a result of good form held his place, broke his leg in a line out. The break was serious and resulted in the game being held up while the air ambulance was called. The stoppage in play did not help Wisbech who seemed to loose their appetite for the game when play eventually resumed. More injuries followed, scrum half David Salmon was forced to leave the field followed by second row Kris Feaviour who has suspected knee damage.
Wisbech renowned for their strong defence missed more tackles in this match then the rest of the season put together. Thurston seized their opportunities, taking the game by the scruff of the neck and hammering Wisbech 47 to 0. "There is very little we can take from this other then the players that stepped into the 1st team all played well under the circumstances and Peter Lankfer deserves a special mention as he never gave up giving his all right to the end" said skipper Paul "Slipper" Lee afterwards. "We wish Mark Martin well and a speedy recovery" he added
